What can a home owner do to prevent termites?
Termites live every where in the ground so the most affective way of preventing termites from attacking is to apply a chemical termite barrier around your home.
Termites love moisture and wood, they need it to survive.
So to help control them there are some easy things you can do:
- Make sure the chemical termite barrier is not physically disturbed by gardening.
- Advise your pest control company if you have installed paving or mulch, or new plumbing since the termite barrier was applied.
- Prevent moisture build up around the home.
- Divert water away from the home by using proper guttering, splash blocks and down pipes.
- Make sure there is proper ventilation beneath any wooden floors.
- Remove any off cuts, debris or any untreated timbers.
- Remove any old tree stumps or roots near the building.
- Make sure trees and shrubs are trimmed so they aren’t covering any vents.
For your garden:
Aphids
To repel sucking insects, shred 30 grams of velvet soap and add to 70 grams of washing soda dissolved in 750ml of hot water. Apply gentle heat until the soap has dissolved, and then add 4 litres of cold water, stirring well. Spray to affected areas, but test for any plant reaction first.
The simplest way of dealing with aphids is to blast them off with a strong spray of water from the garden hose.
Azaleas
For azalea lace bug and two-spotted (red spider) mite, mix together a ¼ cup of milk and 4 cups of flour. Add to 20 litres of water and stir well and continuously. Spray on to the surfaces of the plants every 2 days until the bugs or mites have gone.
Marigolds
Plant some marigolds to give off a volatile insecticide that is toxic to mosquitoes.
Nasturtiums
For woolly aphids, make a nasturtium spray: simmer one cup of leaves in one cup of water for 15 minutes. Allow to cool, and then dilute with equal parts of water.
Slugs and Snails
To protect strawberries and plants from slugs, sprinkle new sawdust around the garden bed. To deter snails, place sharp edged leaves such as holly around the garden.
Weeds
Feed and weed sprays are good, but for the bigger jobs ask your Pest Operator to recommend a suitable product. He can usually spray the weeds for a small extra charge whilst doing your annual service.
Yarrow
Has a repellent effect against beetles, ants, and flies.
Millipedes
They always appear in the Hills Suburbs after the first wet weather.
Good control is obtained by spraying with Ficam-W.
